Introduction
The estimator will assume responsibility for the bidding process. This includes the planning, directing, supervising and controlling of all processes pertaining to the planning and delivery of the bid. These efforts must be in line with the goal of ensuring the sustainability of the business by securing work contracts and the company’s standards, policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
 
  • Actively participate in the decision to bid process.
  • Motivate the Decision-to Bid and Bid Finalisation processes.
  • Take ownership of the bid process by planning, directing, supervising and controlling the full proposal.
  • Handover bid to construction team on award.
  • Ensure an internal contract close–out with construction team.
  • Provide site support in bid clarification and resultant claims.
  • Identify requirements of the bid in order to successfully plan and develop a winning strategy.
  • Update estimation database.
  • Build and maintain successful relationships with clients and agents during the bidding and pre-award phase.
  • Identify client needs in order to adequately address those needs by proposing a successful solution
  • Propose a successful solution to client needs by identifying potential problem areas and suggesting alternatives.
  • Supervise multi-functional support personnel identified and involved in the bid process.
  • Liaise with agents and clients external to the organisation.
  • Schedule and perform a site visit in order to checklist the various appropriate components.
  • Identify potential problem areas and propose an alternative, if it will promote a competitive edge.
  • Identify, delegate and manage support for the bid from the relevant departments.
  • Build up a BOQ in the estimating package.
  • Produce realistic but economical project cost estimates within the required level of accuracy and to suit the proposed time schedule.
  • Develop a submission index for the bid submission file.
  • Set up the required estimate format into the suitable files and directories on computer.
  • Collate of all relevant information, from all parties participating in an estimate, into an estimate file for future reference. (This includes reliable and economically priced suppliers of equipment and services).
  • Conduct a risk assessment by using the relevant resources.
  • Build up P&G value in estimating package.
  • Set up and facilitate required meetings with relevant parties in order to deliver results.
  • Finalise the tender process with the Proposals Manager.
  • Deliver the bid on time.

Minimum requirements

Qualification:
 
  • A relevant technical qualification; B Tech Mechanical or National Diploma or National Diploma construction/ surveying.
  • Registration with SAPCI/ ACCE and ECSA Qualification will be an added advantage
 
Skills & Experience:
 
  • Previous demonstrated experience.
  • Demonstrated success in estimating and winning large-scale projects.
  • Proficient knowledge and demonstrated previous experience working with Estimation software (Candy CCS)
  • An in-depth appreciation of engineering techniques, construction processes and their suitability.
  • Ability to assess site conditions and constraints from a physical inspection.
  • A practical-minded hands-on approach coupled with excellent communication and people skills.
  • Strong leadership qualities, with the ability to develop and mentor other people in the team.
  • Detailed understanding of project management principles and techniques.
  • Good understanding of Cost Management, Change Control, Planning & Risk Analysis & Management.
